more frequently in the spring and the fall, and a relationship to temperature or to changes in temperature may be involved (unpublished observations, Kaufman HE, 1981; Barren BA, 1994). The appearance of fever blisters and clinical herpes during temperature stress in hudans is a well-known clinical phenomenon. Our primate model may provide a way to study this relationship in a laboratory setting. Additionally, in studying drugs that may prevent recurrences of herpes, the ability to stimulate more recurrences in less time and to synchronize the emergence of disease not only would simplify study design and shorten the period of observation, it also would facilitate economical use of expensive, new, custom-made pharmaceuticals and reduce the high cost of therapeutic studies in nonhuman primates.

Atropine reduces experimental myopia and eye enlargement via a nonaccommodative mechanism.

PURPOSE To determine whether the muscarinic antagonist atropine effectively reduces or prevents experimentally induced myopia via a nonaccommodative mechanism. METHODS Chicks were monocularly deprived (MD) of pattern vision by placement of a translucent occluder over the left eye. In two of the three MD groups, chicks received a series of intravitreal injections of atropine (n = 8) or saline ...

Development of Experimental Myopia in Chicks in a Natural Environment

PURPOSE The hypothesis that outdoor exposure might protect against myopia has generated much interest, although available data find only modest clinical efficacy. We tested the effect of outdoor rearing on form-deprivation myopia in chicks, a myopia model markedly inhibited by high-intensity indoor laboratory lighting. METHODS Unilaterally goggled cohorts of White Leghorn chicks were maintain...

Lid suture myopia in chicks.

Domestic chicks reared under continuous light developed light-induced avian glaucoma (LIAG), including eye enlargement and flat cornea. Chicks reared under dim light developed dim light buphthalmos (DLB), a somewhat similar eye enlargement, superimposed on the LIAG effect when, as in one subgroup of the present experiments, the dim light was also continuous. Unilateral lid suture elicited exper...

Myopia in the eye of developing chicks following monocular and binocular lid closure.

It has recently been reported that lid closure in monkeys, whether monocularly or binocularly performed, leads to an axial enlargement of the eye, resulting in a high myopia (Wiesel and Raviola, i?77. 1978). Using a similar experimental procedure in monkeys Von Noorden and Crawford (1978) were unable to repeat these results. Slight myopia was also obtained in tree shrews similarly operated. alt...

The effect of ambient illuminance on the development of deprivation myopia in chicks.

PURPOSE Recent epidemiologic studies have shown that children who spend a higher proportion of time outdoors are less likely to develop myopia. This study was undertaken to investigate whether light levels may be a relevant factor in the development of myopia. METHODS; Paradigm 1: Chicks were fitted with translucent diffusers for 5 days, with the diffusers removed daily for 15 minutes under one...

Different visual deprivations produce different ametropias and different eye shapes.

To compare the effects on the postnatal development of the eye of both total and partial form deprivation in diurnally reared chicks and of dark-rearing, chicks were reared with occluders covering one eye from hatching for up to 6 weeks. In diurnally reared birds, both total and partial form deprivation resulted in severe axial myopia and increased eye size. These effects were greatest for the ...
